Courtenay is an advocate, arbitrator and Acting Judge of the High Court of South Africa with 20 years of experience in commercial law, judicial proceedings, and arbitration. Since admission as both an Attorney and Advocate of the High Court of South Africa, she has a commercial practice at the Johannesburg Bar, focusing on company law, insolvency, contract law, and intellectual property. She appears in South Africa’s High Courts, the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Copyright Tribunal. She is also regularly involved in commercial arbitrations, including international law arbitrations governed by the UNCITRAL Rules. She holds a Bachelor of Laws degree and a Master of Laws degree, with distinction. Courtenay’s son, Matthew, is in his final year at Bruern Abbey Prep, having joined at the start of 2022. Courtenay became a trustee at the start of the academic year in 2023.
